Tamar Nachmany's Yiddish/English Play Debuts!

Inspired by the erotic story “Teibele And Hurmizah” by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Johns Hopkins University student Tamar Nachmany has adapted the story into a play that incorporates a congruous mix of English and Yiddish! The play, with accompanying music from Charm City Klezmer, will be performed on April 13 and 14 at the Arellano Theater at Johns Hopkins University, April 19 at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, and April 21 at the Bell Foundry at 1539 N. Calvert St. (Station North). The shows will open with Talmudic standup by the poet Alexander Nemser and a short screening of Mugi Takei’s erotic, stop-motion animations.

| so, me a young woman trying to grow up i was alone driving into the desert away from my own home away from everything i knew i said "mother, i've come so far i've come so far you cannot catch me" i kept on driving i thought of the young lover i left behind will i love again like i've loved? i felt drowsy in the overwhelming life force of the desert and my own desire to live almost sleepy i had to force myself to keep my eyes open i thought of my father my father fragile emotional overly sensitive crazy the words to describe him all these beautiful words i kept on repeating in my mouth |
